Am I in an abusive home?
Domestic abuse is when someone bullies, hurts or threatens the person they are with. They might be going out with them, living with them or married.
• Hit, kick, punch or push the other person
• Hurt them emotionally by making them feel bad about themselves, or stopping them doing things they want to do
• Hurt them financially by taking money away from them or not letting them work
• Hurt them sexually by touching them against their will
Adults might sometimes try to hide what’s going on, but if you are experiencing domestic abuse, you probably see and hear what’s happening. Maybe you see your mum crying, or injured. Or you may be caught up in a fight, or hurt if the abuser turns on you.
Domestic abuse can make you feel lots of things – scared, upset, angry, confused, depressed or guilty that you can’t stop it. Whatever you feel, it helps to talk to someone about what’s happening in your life.
