About Us

Edinburgh Women’s Aid (EWA) is a registered charity working towards a society free from domestic abuse. We provide practical and emotional support, information and advice to women, children and young people.

We can give you advice on how you and your children can stay safe, including guidance on how the law can protect you, provide temporary refuge accommodation if you’re unable to stay in your home, and offer you support for a better future. We aim to put your needs at the heart of the organisation, respecting your right to make choices that are right for you. We take a friendly, non-judgemental approach and delivery of our services; you can talk to us freely and confidentially.

As part of the Women’s Aid network, we also raise awareness of the prevalence and effects of domestic abuse across society, campaigning to change attitudes and the legal system, and bring the issue of domestic abuse from behind closed doors.

If you are currently experiencing domestic abuse, have experienced abuse in the past, or if you think you are at risk of abuse, please remember, it’s not your fault. Whatever your personal situation, we would like to offer you our support. To access our services, call 0131 315 8110 or email duty@edinwomensaid.co.uk. Please Get in Touch for more information.

Our People

We currently employ around fifty women employees who provide a range of practical and emotional support where it’s needed. This may be over the phone, in person at our Edinburgh office, within your community, or at one of our refuge accommodation spaces, depending on your circumstances. We are all highly experienced in helping women, children and young people recover from abusive relationships and to start new lives free from threat and fear.

We also have a Board of Trustees, a group of women with a range of relevant skills, knowledge and experience, who are ultimately responsible for the governance of the organisation.

Our trustees:

  • Safeguard and promote the values and mission of EWA.
  • Determine the strategy and structure of EWA.
  • Ensure effective functioning of both EWA and our Board.

Our Vision

Our Mission

We work towards a society that is free from domestic abuse by offering practical and emotional support, information and advice to women and children, and by raising awareness of domestic abuse and its prevalence across society.

We provide a range of services: a helpline and crisis support, refuge accommodation, court advocacy, legal advice, a peer support service, support into employment, therapeutic support for mums and children, and training and information sessions on domestic abuse for Edinburgh’s public, private and third sector organisations.

Our Beliefs

We believe that domestic abuse is unacceptable and intolerable. Women and children have a right to live their lives free from all forms of violence and abuse and any violation of this is a violation of the rights of women and children.

We believe that violence against women is a both a cause and a consequence of gender inequality and discrimination, influenced by historical and structural power imbalances between women and men which exist in varying degrees across all communities in the world.

Our Impact

Following our 50th year of service, Edinburgh Women’s Aid continue to support women, young people and children to recover from the trauma of domestic abuse through the delivery of our crucial support services. Read about our impact in numbers, along with past events, campaigns and milestones, in our annual Impact Reports below.
